magic in its simplicity

Für Elise

"Für Elise" written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1810 for a student of his, Therese (nicknamed Elise). Beethoven wanted to marry her however she did not want to marry him. He composed a piece for her, something simple, yet profound. In the midst of composing it, she refused to marry him. Distraught, he consequently wrote the subsequent verses so difficult that she could never play them.

The piece of music, which was written for the piano, was not published until 1865, a long time after Beethoven’s death. It is one of the most well-known pieces of piano music in the world.

My Elise

My child, my treasure, she is by far the greatest blessing of my life.

In choosing her name, without hesitation, I did so in appreciation and honor of a deaf German pianist and composer, Ludwig van Beethoven, born centuries ago who created music that has enchanted my spirit and filled my soul with reverie and inspiration my whole life. My Elise, My Sunshine lives up to her namesake and then some. She is extraordinary, as I knew she would be.

Ella and Louis

Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, “Ella and Louis” is nearly perfect.  They were the extemporaneous heart of jazz elevated to iconic status, desegregating American popular culture in just 11 songs. Armstrong, the innovator and ambassador of jazz, and Fitzgerald, its most gifted singer.
